As you know, I am a huge fan of Dr. Jeanne M. Wallace, a PhD nutritionist who specializes in nutritional strategies for brain tumor patients. I am also a huge fan of fish oil, which I used as an anticoagulant long before I learned of a tiny benign brain tumor. When I read Dr. Wallace’s papers, I realized that fish oil was also an essential nutritional element for combatting brain tumors.
Today, while googling on “fish oil” and “brain tumors”, I once again stumbled onto another of Dr. Wallace’s studies. This time, it is a fascinating PowerPoint lecture, another “must read”.
The first thing to get my attention was her focus on antioxidants. You want to target 3500 – 5000 ORAC units daily. That is approximately 2-3 fruits and 3-5 vegetables daily. It’s hard to consistently get that level of fresh (not overcooked) fruits and vegetables daily so I do it with low-sugar juice. My favorite is the MonaVie Active (acai berry) blend; four ounces has the equivalent of 13 servings of fruits and vegetables. The freeze-dried acai has 15 times the antioxidants of whole blueberries and 20 times the antioxidants of whole raspberries.
The second thing to get my attention was a chart correlating the survival of cancer patients with their level of inflammation. The lower the inflammation, the longer they survived.
You should DECREASE your intake of Omega-6 and INCREASE your intake of Omega-3 (Increase omega-3 fats—flax, cold-water fish, organic grass-fed meat/poultry/dairy and omega-3 enriched eggs).
Fish oil, curcurmin, resveratrol, Vitamins A & E, all reduce inflammation.
And then her final eye-opener is that Copper promotes angiogenesis, which is the growth of blood vessels to the new tumor. You want to starve the tumor, not give it blood and nutrients. Of all things, Omega-3 fatty acids (such as those found in fish oil) help to do that!
The chart at the final page of her presentation gives a multi-faceted approach to limiting the growth of tumors. Please do whatever your doctor and surgeon recommend, but also bring to them these suggestions for supportive nutritional therapies.
