Antibiotics, hormones, prozac — How about putting some water in our water supply?
I can’t say I was surprised by the levels of drugs in our nation’s water supply. As someone trying to fight the causes of brain tumors naturally, I already knew about estrogen in water and how it was changing the sex of fish. Besides, a few weeks ago, a doctor told someone I know to dump $1,000 worth of unneeded prescription narcotics down the toilet, and I thought, Whoo-eee, wonder how many people put THAT into the sewer system every day?
It’s not that the drugs CAUSE brain tumors. My theory is simply that you want to give your body a great environment to heal naturally and how can it do that if it’s constantly exposed to chemicals and toxins?
But to learn the MAGNITUDE of the garbage in water that has already been through the “cleaning” of a sewer system… that was scary. And to hear people say, Well, it’s damaging the fish and wildlife but there’s no proof it can affect humans… Sheesh.
According to the AP (USAToday), Philadelphia found 56 pharaceuticals or byproducts in their water supply. Northern New Jersey found angina medications and mood-stabilizers in their water. Drugs have been found in the drinking water of 24 major metropolitan cities.
But the Washington Post reports that many utility companies don’t see the need to test for these drugs, since it isn’t federally mandated. And, oh, hey, no big surprise. If you don’t know about something, you don’t have to deal with it, right?
In fact, a huge spin campaign has been kicked off. One former member of the Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission tells us the water supply is completely safe. The title of his article uses a classic disinformation spin technique: Hysteria in Parts per Billion.
(I remember how this sort of spin control started at the beginning of the massive pet food contamination of 2007, with, the pet food supply is completely safe, and then one revelation after another made people realize we had a gigantic problem coming out of China).
I just wonder how far this has to go before people realize we have a serious problem?
For me, I’m just shopping for the world’s best water filter.
